Why this is serious

An airbag that becomes a danger itself

The propellant in Takata inflators changes with heat and humidity. When deploying, the pressure can become too high – the metal housing ruptures and fragments fly into the cabin.

  • Several million affected vehicles worldwide
  • Recalls are being extended continuously
  • The replacement is free for owners

Frequently asked questions

Takata recall: questions and answers

What is the problem with Takata airbags?

The inflators of many Takata airbags contain a propellant that can change with heat and humidity. When the airbag deploys, the pressure can then become too high, the metal housing ruptures and metal fragments are thrown into the cabin. This can cause serious or fatal injuries.

How do I know whether my car is affected?

The only binding answer comes from the vehicle identification number (VIN): enter it on your manufacturer’s recall page or have an authorised workshop check it. Our search by make, model and year is a first indication but does not replace the VIN check.

Where do I find the vehicle identification number (VIN)?

The 17-character VIN is in field E of the vehicle registration certificate (Part I, “Fahrzeugschein”). You can also find it at the bottom of the windscreen on the driver’s side and often on the type plate in the door frame or engine bay.

How much does the airbag replacement cost?

Nothing. The replacement under a recall is free of charge for owners and is carried out at an authorised workshop.

Can I still drive my car?

If you have received a stop-drive notice (“Stop Drive”) from your manufacturer, leave the vehicle parked until the airbag has been replaced. If your car is affected by a regular recall, book a workshop appointment promptly.

I did not receive a recall letter – am I still affected?

Possibly. Recall letters go to the address on file with the registration authority. If it is out of date or you bought the car second-hand, the letter may be missing. So check yourself with the VIN and keep the address on your registration certificate up to date.

Does the recall also apply to used cars and re-imports?

Yes. A recall is tied to the vehicle, not the owner. Used cars re-imported into Germany can also be affected, for example if they come from countries with a stop-drive order.

Is the information on this page binding?

No. We summarise reports from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), ADAC and manufacturers and flag single-source claims. Only information from the manufacturer and the KBA is binding.
